Crossed Swords

Crossed Swords

These pictures are from our field trip to two of the International Zone’s major monuments: the Crossed Swords and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The hands holding the Crossed Swords are modeled after Saddam Hussein’s (naturally). The statues were erected to commemorate Iraq’s “victory” in the Iran-Iraq War, and the green helmets strewn around the bases of the statues and embedded in the road are from captured or killed Iranian soldiers. Between the two pairs of crossed swords are an amphitheater and parade ground.
